Huge Sound Problem: Async Car Sound

Hey guys!

Wanted to let you know that there are huge problems with the sound when driving a vehicle.

The sound when driving a car or bike (not sure about choppers and stuff) is totally off-sync and doesn't match the action.

Some quotes from affected players in order to illustrate:

"Acceleration sounds are delayed and tend to continue long after I'm off the throttle (revving). They don't ever really match up with the action."

"Revving and shifting is all messed up and out of sync too, like cars have unlimited gears. "

"Also, when driving any car it sounds like the car is revving in first gear in a loop."

"i have the same problem, it really sucks when you are driving to have the car audio so off from whats going on, also the whole unlimited gears, car revving and changing gears as long as you are driving, is really annoying also."

I'm really loving the game but this is a HUGE issue for me and definitely a really hard blow to the atmosphere. You guys really need to fix this asap.

I'm running the game on Windows XP with a Realtek onbard sound card (Board: Gigabyte GA-P31-ES3G). The drivers are up to date. Using standard Logitech stereo speakers with 1 subwoofer, plugged into the standard green audioinput at the back of my PC).

I've heard a lot of people saying "switch the audio output in Windows from 48Hz to 44Hz" (something like that). Unfortunately, these recommendations were for Windows 7 users and I'm definitely not able to find these setting in Windows XP (neither in the standard audio configurations of the OS, nor in my Realtek HD Audio tool). If anyone knows where I can adjust these settings in Win XP, please let me know, although I'm not really positive that this will solve the car sound issues since I'm assuming it's simply a bug (and massive boner-killer).

Proof that I'm definitely not the only one having this issue:

So please devs take care of this sh** asap and it's a huge game!

The ability to alter the output frequency that everything is resampled to seems to be a thing that appeared in Vista when the audio system was overhauled. I don't know exactly what XP does.

Japanese mind-controlling octopi and a gun that shoots chum to coax a shark to burst out of the pavement and eat people don't make any sense either. This game is silly, even the audio. In Steelport, cars have 69,696,969,696,969 gears.

Serioulsy guys? That's your answer regarding a huge atmosphere killer in the game?

You can't tell me that's the way the audio's supposed to be like when driving.

Cars with millions of gears because it's generally a silly game? OK. Fair enough.

Car sounds that are off-sync, delayed etc.? Fail in the audio development.

Still testing sites rate the sound of SR 3 9/10. What a joke.

To me it simply looks like a huge fail and nothing else that def. needs to be fixed asap.

Pretty sure that was just a joke. Well, i thought it was funny, anyway. The sounds not matching the action does sound like a more serious problem than the silly infinite-gears thing. I'm still not sure whether the latter is a bug or poor design.

I know it sounds weird but try leaving your browser (in my case firefox) open when you run the game, i have the exact same problem with only (as far as i know) vehicle sounds being affected.

I too have win XP and a realtek soundcard and if i do the above, for whatever reason the sound works perfectly.

Windows XP, Realtek, car sounds out of sync.

I just registered to say that it seems I have found a solution. Cap the framerate to 30 and it's all good - this is easier said than done however. I first noticed a change in the car sounds when I attempted to record a video at 30fps using Fraps. I then tried to write a program that caps the framerate for me, but after about 8 hours or so I gave up. Now I managed to get it to work by using a modified D3D9.dll originally made for Skyrim. Obviously, installing a file like this from an unknown source is a huge risk. I got my dll from the Skyrim Nexus. Unfortunately this place requires you to be a member.

If you do have access to this site (or manage to find a similar dll from another source) all you really have to do is download the file and unzip d3d9.dll and antilag.cfg into the "...\Steam\SteamApps\common\saints row the third" -folder (the same folder contains saintsrowthethird.exe).

HTH

Edit: Nevermind, the problem is back. For some reason it was affected by graphics options (higher made it better) and it worked for 5 or so hours with the modified dx dll.

Edit: I think ChainsawCharles is on to something there. If I leave the browser on (after watching at least a second of a youtube video) the sounds are ok. When I close the browser and restart the game the problem returns. I also noticed the same pattern with VLC. If I start the VLC media player and leave it in the background sounds are fine. I wonder if this would have something to do with people having low performance on high-end rigs. Is the game failing at setting the gpu to 3d mode or something? Either way, I have no problems with performance on my 285GTX.

Guys, you rock!

I can confirm that leaving the browser or VLC open while playing the game is the solution. Epic weirdness! Laughing

Thx a lot for your help. Now I'm able to enjoy this fantastic game with a huge boner while driving around. Cool

So devs, you know what's going on. Maybe this information will help you come up with a permament fix. I think there are a lot of guys out there that still have these async vehicle sounds and don't know what to do about it. I'll try to spread the word, but you guys should still come up with a patch fix.

Thx again ChainsawCharles and Shadow_SR!

Whoa, careful, you don't want to maintain that for more than a few hours at a time! ;)

Exactly the way the game was intended to be played.
